The petition needs to gather 100,000 signatures to be considered for a parliamentary debate.
A new petition has been launched to scrap the despicable “rape clause” which forms part of the new changes to tax credits.
Brutal Tory welfare reforms mean child tax credits are now capped at two children.
The petition needs to gather 100,000 signatures to have the welfare cap considered for a parliamentary debate.
A clause in the new rules means mothers who have a third child as a result of rape can be exempted but would have to prove it.
Experts including Rape Crisis Scotland. Women’s Aid Scotland, the Royal College of Nurses and top psychologists have condemned the clause as inhumane and damaging to victims of rape.
All have refused to co-operate in implementing it.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has called “disgusting”.
The petition demands the government “scrap the “rape clause” and the “family cap” on social security payments”.
The petition states:” As the “rape clause” exemption cannot be delivered in a way that does not breach women’s rights and undermine women’s equality and safety, we call on the UK Government to repeal the “family cap” measures in the Welfare Reform and Work Act 2016, including all of its exemptions.”
At 10,000 signatures, government will respond to the petition and at 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament.
Sandy Brindley from Rape Crisis Scotland has called on people across Scotland to sign the petition and oppose the abhorrent and punitive welfare reform.
She said:’We urge people to join with us in standing against this inhumane policy and help us to force the government to think again.”
