Turn2us, who help people in poverty gain access to benefits, told MPs: “The most worrying trend that is emerging is pregnant women asking the call handler to undertake a benefit check to ascertain what they would be entitled to if they continue with the pregnancy, citing that the outcome will help them to decide whether they continue with the pregnancy or terminate it.
“We’re concerned that this type of call will become more frequent as a result of the two-child limit that came into effect on April 6.”
The Tory measure limits tax credits to the first two children in every family – with an exception for women who have had a child as a result of rape.
SNP MP Alison Thewliss, who has led the campaign against the policy, said: “No woman should have to worry about whether they can afford to continue their pregnancy because of government austerity.
