Tories accused of ‘absolutely disgusting’ treatment of disabled people : Welfare Weekly

SNP call for a review of the Personal Independence Payment system and demand a reversal of cuts to Employment Support Allowance.

The SNP manifesto has outlined the party’s commitment to protecting disabled people from Tory cuts and the Tories’ damaging austerity agenda – calling for a review of the Personal Independence Payment system and demanding a reversal of the cuts to Employment Support Allowance.

The SNP in Government have made efforts to increase support for disabled people and to protect people from cruel and callous Tory policies – by rejecting the means-testing of disability benefits and by establishing a Disability Benefits Assessment Commission to provide recommendations and guidance on benefit eligibility.

This is in stark contrast with the Tory approach, which has stigmatised disabled people and removed motability vehicles from hundreds of vulnerable people.

The party’s manifesto for next month’s vote calls on the UK government to fully engage with the assessment by the UN of the UK’s implementation of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – and urges the UK government to implement the Convention in UK law.
