Pressure on Theresa May to put an end to years of damaging austerity cuts, as SNP propose £118bn investment plan.

The SNP has said Theresa May must end Tory austerity cuts, and accept SNP plans for a fiscally responsible £118bn investment package, to boost support for public services and family budgets.

The call follows comments by senior Tories conceding that the UK government will be forced to ease austerity, and increase spending on public services, following the general election result.

The SNP fiscal plan, set out in its manifesto, would aim to balance the current budget by the end of the Parliament (2021/22), stabilise net borrowing at the level it was at before the financial crash, and see debt begin to fall as a share of GDP from 2019/20, releasing £118bn for public spending over the course of the parliament.

SNP Economy spokesperson Stewart Hosie MP said: “The Tories must listen to voters and finally put an end to the damaging austerity cuts that have held back the economy, damaged public services, and hammered millions by squeezing family budgets.”

She added: “Theresa May’s plans for further cuts were roundly rejected at the election. The SNP alternative fiscal plan would free up £118 billion of public investment to grow the economy, safeguard our public services, protect household incomes and put the UK’s finances back on a stable footing.
