A top consultant claims the NHS spent £1million fighting him after he tried to turn whistleblower.

Neurosurgeon James Akinwunmi says his marriage collapsed and his kids were estranged as he battled to expose failings at his hospital.

Bosses sacked him, and he claims they spent the cash fighting to stop him shining a spotlight on wrongs they continue to deny.

The doctor of 30 years said: “It nearly destroyed me. I tried to show them the evidence in shortcomings and they were spending thousands to fight me in court.”

In May Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust lost an appeal against a tribunal ruling which said they had unfairly sacked Mr Akinwunmi.

It came after he refused to return to a “hostile” working environment in which colleagues had closed ranks and isolated him after he made allegations about malpractice.

He believed NHS emergencies were being turned away while on-call staff treated private patients.
