A FAMILY-OF-NINE has been forced to live in a tent in a back garden after being evicted from a council house for falling behind in their rent.

Gareth Agius says he is at “rock bottom” and has “thought of turning to drink” after moving his large family into a five man tent in the back garden of his partner’s mum’s home.

The 26-year-old told the Hull Daily Mail: “I admit we have made mistakes and the system is very confusing but it doesn’t mean we should be living like this.

“I feel nervous and desperate. I am close to losing my job and have even thought about turning to drink, which I have never done before.”

Mr Agius’ partner’s kids are aged between 18 and nine. The 18-year-old is living in her grandmother’s home but the rest are cramming into the tent every night.

He and partner Kay Hooper were evicted after falling £6,000 short on their rent in a mix-up over supported housing.

Gareth said debts began to build up after a housing association failed to apply for an exemption to the housing benefits cap on their behalf.

He claims he managed to reduce the debts to £2,000 but was told he was not paying cash back quickly enough and evicted.
