It includes paracetamol, hay fever remedies and indigestion tablets.

Local commissioners imposed the restrictions without waiting for the result of an NHS England consultation on the matter, which ends in October.

The policy is expected to save the NHS up to £100million a year if implemented nationwide.

The British Medical Association has warned GPs could be vulnerable to complaints if they refuse to prescribe treatments that patients need – even if they are available without a prescription.
