Health experts said the rise in the condition, which is usually seen in the over-40s, was “hugely disturbing”.

Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable, with the No1 cause poor diet and lack of exercise.

Last year in England and Wales 621 patients in children’s diabetes units had treatment for the condition.

Fifteen were aged from five to nine and 78.5 per cent were obese, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health figures show.

The true scale is likely to be much higher as the statistics do not cover kids treated by GPs.

Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of heart problems, stroke, blindness, nerve damage and kidney disease.

Izzi Seccombe, of the Local Government Association, said: “This is a hugely disturbing trend.

  1. I’m astounded that people spend 100’s of pounds a week on food. I saw a programme on tv a few weeks ago. A couple with children, buying takeaways every night of the week, not even knowing how much money they were spending, or even the thousands of calories they were consuming in one pizza.

    At the other end of the scale, there are people, so poor, they can’t afford fresh food, and rely on processed food which is cheap and filling, but killing them.

    The experts reckon that this generation of children may not outlive their parents. Scary thought!

    Imagine a prisoner in Auschwitz ?, And the barracks Rottenfuhrer says…Sir/madam, could we interest you in a sweet and sour chicken with this lovely fried rice ?…I doubt very much if even one person refuses or even says…Hey am not eating that, it’s bad for you….lol
